Mantario Rowdown and Provincial Time Trial

The July long weekend will be a busy time at the Kenora Rowing Club.

Next Saturday, July 2nd we will be hosting a Manitoba Rowing 2000m Time Trial. If you are interested in participating, please contact Antony Patterson, Manitoba Rowing Head Coach at rowingcoach@sportmanitoba.ca. This event is meant for athletes trying to qualify for provincial standards, or those who are interested in receiving a GMS (Gold Medal Standard) prognostic.

Sunday, July 3rd, is the Mantario Rowdown, an informal junior and novice day of racing. The race day package has been distributed to club coaches, and if you have any questions, contact KRC Head Coach Ashleigh Milani at rowkenora@gmail.com for details. There will be a BBQ at the end of the day, included in the entry fee.

Following the Mantario Rowdown, the Manitoba Rowing Association will be holding a 2 week training camp at Rabbit Lake, from July 4th – 14th (break day July 9th), which all club athletes are able to register in. This camp will include 3 training sessions per day, video sessions, technical lectures, and more. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will also be provided. This is an amazing opportunity to work with our Provincial Head Coach, Antony Patterson, an experienced and internationally recognized leader in our sport. Whether you are interested in attending the full camp, 1 week, or 1 day, please talk with Coach Ashleigh for details.

Happy rowing!

KRC hires new Head Coach!

The Kenora Rowing Club is pleased to announce that we have hired Ashleigh Milani as our Head Coach for the 2016 season. Milani, who is from Winnipeg, will run competitive and learn to row programs for the Club and oversee summer student coaches. Ashleigh graduated from the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor’s in Kinesiology, and she also is a Certified Strength Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Milani rowed for the Winnipeg Rowing Club and Manitoba Rowing Association for 6 years, competing as an athlete at the 2011 Western Canada Summer Games, the 2013 Canada Summer Games, and 2013 Canadian University Championships. She has coached a wide variety of rowing programs, has been trained through NCCP & Rowing Canada’s coach education courses and is completing her RCA Performance Coach Certification.

“I’m really excited to help grow the rowing community in Kenora this summer.” says Milani. “Rabbit Lake is one of the nicest rowing venues in Canada, and it’s supported by Canada’s most amazing ‘little club that can’. I’ve been coming to Rabbit Lake for the past 5 years to race and coach, and I feel so lucky that I get to coach here every day now.”

Rabbit Lake will be the rowing venue for the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Milani, who competed as a rower in the 2013 Games, talks about the opportunity for Kenora Rowing Club members to compete with Manitoba in 2017. “One of my goals this summer is to grow the Junior Competitive (U19) training group, and get a high percentage of them into next summer’s Canada Games boats. Because we’re hosting, I’d love for lots of Kenora athletes to race and represent their hometown at a national event.”

Tim Wehner, President of the Kenora Rowing Club, is looking forward to a summer of growth.  “We are excited as a Club about our partnership with Manitoba and the opportunity to bring one of their coaches to Rabbit Lake. We want to develop Kenora into the Mid-Canada Centre of Excellence. The venue is one of the best in the country, we are located on this picture-perfect lake setting, and Kenora is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Last year, we hosted the Manitoba Rowing Association summer training camp for two weeks. We realized that other athletes are looking for new training and learning venues and Kenora can offer that. Having Ashleigh here this summer will increase our profile.”

The Kenora Rowing Club offers a range of programming including; Learn-to-Row courses (for anyone interested in trying out the sport), Junior and Master competitive programs (for those looking for a challenge), and recreational programming (for those who just enjoy being on the lake). Milani is hoping to grow the Club`s membership this summer by introducing more people to the sport. “We are a very inclusive community. Everyone at the club is here to make friends, be active, and develop their skills in the boat, so if that sounds like a community you want to be a part of, we’ve got a spot for you.”

The Kenora Rowing Club is inviting the community to a `Meet the Coach/Season Kick-off` brunch on Sunday, May 29 at 10:00 am at the Kenora Rowing Club. Meet the coach and fellow team members, enjoy some good company and good food, and let’s get this season going!
